In polo, sudden death is how the final ends. This season, it’s how it started.
Last Chance Polo Club is forty acres of sumac and a barn with half a roof on it. Mason Caldwell and Julian Rosemont built it with a borrowed truck and whatever they had left after walking away from the Rosemont name.
Their first season nearly ends before it starts. A scuffle in a match against Briarcliff puts one of their own on the ground, and he doesn’t get up. The league calls it what leagues always call these things. Mason stands at a podium and says the word accident out loud, and doesn’t believe a syllable of it.
What he digs into runs through nineteen years of league politics and one family’s money, and every road it takes him down ends somewhere Julian will not want to follow.
By October the club has a shot at the Windward Cup. Julian has a question about his own blood that one man has been waiting a long time to be asked. The final goes to a sudden-death chukker.
Some of it gets settled on the field. The rest of it doesn’t.
